Packages from home

I like receiving mail. The packages I get from my family are usually pretty thoughtful and considerate. It really is a great morale booster to get stuff from people you know, and it's even pretty cool when friends of friends or even strangers send you stuff.

Well, at least most of the time. Today my platoon got a massive package of shaving cream and disposable razors. Not nearly as awesome as coffee and/or cookies.

Yeah, I was a big fan of care packages. Even the hygiene packages are nice, because it's like "well, don't have to spend money on that stuff for the next... decade." And I don't know what your PX is like, but our was out of some basic hygiene items for months at a time, so those were a lifesaver.

It's funny, though, sometimes you do get stuff that makes you wonder what people back home think our lives are like. The best story on that note was from a Marine I know, who had been stuck on a firebase in Afghanistan for weeks with no electricity, showers, and nothing but T-rats and MREs for food. And no mail for the first several weeks, until a supply bird dropped off a care package full of nothing but boxed cake and brownie mixes. I asked him what they did with them. "Come on, we're Marines. We just ate 'em."
